You are the light of the world.

This morning was damp and dreary here.  The rain had almost stopped.  The moisture hung in the air.  The sun couldn’t poke through the cloud cover.  It was not your typical summer morning.  As I began my usual morning routine, I lit a candle as we needed some light in the room.  We needed some brightness.   As I lit the candle, the room seemed brighter and more alive somehow.  It filled the room with warmth and cheer.  It brought some light into a dreary day.

As the candle burned, Jesus’ teachings resonated in my heart.  He calls us to be the light of the world.  We are encouraged to shine and show who we truly are. But things in this world are complicated.  We see famine and despair.  We hear of violence and riots.  There is pain and darkness all around and we wonder how one person can make a difference.  Can we truly be a source of light in this world?  Is one person enough?

Like the candle we can shape the mood and atmosphere in our lives.  Our hope, the faith we carry and the love we offer can inspire and change those around us. All actions, no matter how big have the ability to shape and change as we move through life.  As we bring Christ’s light and hope to the world, we do impact the world in a positive way.

“Here’s another way to put it: You’re here to be light, bringing out the God-colors in the world. God is not a secret to be kept. We’re going public with this, as public as a city on a hill. If I make you light-bearers, you don’t think I’m going to hide you under a bucket, do you? I’m putting you on a light stand. Now that I’ve put you there on a hilltop, on a light stand—shine! Keep open house; be generous with your lives. By opening up to others, you’ll prompt people to open up with God, this generous Father in heaven.
